Hairstyle Trend that may not Return

Sometimes a fashion trend develops and gets well beyond what we could expect to be a practical item. But is does happen as you can see.

During the 1700s in Europe, originating mainly from France, members of royal courts and high society enjoyed makeup, clothing, and hairstyles that took hours and hours to apply, construct, and maintain.

Example of the exaggerated hairstyle that was in fashion in France during the late 1700s.

Powdered hairstyles were just one element of formal court dress, which included elaborate hooped dresses with boned bodices and long trains for women complemented by (in France, at least) bright, dark pink rounds of rouge on the cheeks (a status symbol), and swords and silk coats for men. Fashionable women would have to set aside significant portions of their day to have their hair styled, and important hairstylists would be not only booked solid, but supported by a whole team of assistants.

By 1770, powdered hair was mandatory in court. Nobody dared to show their faces without it.

Marie Antionette about 1775

To have her hair powdered, a woman (or a man) would sit in her dressing room, draped with a large cape. Her hairdresser would then blow powder into her hair, apply a substance called pomatum to the hair to fix it.

The large sculptures of hair that were arranged on women’s heads would be supported and held together using wire, tow, wool, and pads, and would be decorated with anything from precious jewels and metals to large plumes.

Items that were added to create the hairstyle.

These hairstyles even featured detailed figurines ranging from babies and nurses to ships and buildings (indicating something that was happening to someone, like having a baby, or cashing in on something that was in vogue, such as the American Revolution).

Statue of Marie Antionette about 1781 shows the many items in her hair.

With all the difficulties associated with this fashion, it can be assumed that this type of hairstyle may never return to a salon near you.

Statue with mirror behind shows the many items including feathers and a large rosette.

Celebrity Queens of the Past

A life of Luxury and Peace is what we consider to be the life of a Queen who we always imagine to be beautiful, but in ancient times it could be quite different. The lives of these three Queens may fascinate and surprise you.

CLEOPATRA

Cleopatra sculpture at Altes Museum

Cleopatra, the last pharaoh of Egypt, ruling before the Romans took control, came to power in Egypt at the age of 17.  She reigned from 51 to 30 BCE. Cleopatra is known for her relationships with Roman commanders Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, by whom she had three children, and her suicide by snake bite after her husband or partner Antony took his own life. Many have assumed she was a beauty, but, unlike Nefertiti, Cleopatra was probably not like she has been portrayed in the movies. Instead, she was smart and politically valuable.  She was actually Macedonian, but she was still an Egyptian queen and worshiped as a god.

BOUDICCA

Boudicca (also spelled Boadicea and Boudica) was the wife of King Prasutagus of the Celtic Iceni, in the east of ancient Britain. When the Romans conquered Britain, they allowed the king to continue his rule, but when he died and his wife, Boudicca took over, the Romans wanted the territory.  In an effort to assert their dominance, the Romans are said to have stripped and beaten Boudicca and raped her daughters. In a brave act of retaliation, in about A.D. 60, Boudicca led her troops against the Romans, killing thousands of them.  Unfortunately, Boudicca’s success didn’t last long, and the tide turned with the Romans defeating the Celts. It is not known how Boudicca died, but she may have committed suicide.

ZENOBIA

Queen Zenobia of Palmyra was a 3rd century queen in modern Syria, east of the Mediterranean Sea, who claimed Cleopatra and Dido of Carthage as ancestors, defied the Romans, and rode into battle against them, but was eventually defeated and probably taken prisoner.   Zenobia became queen when her husband and his son were assassinated in 267. Zenobia’s son Vaballanthus was heir, but just an infant, so Zenobia ruled instead (as regent).  A “warrior queen” Zenobia conquered Egypt in 269, part of Asia Minor, taking Cappadocia and Bithynia, and ruled a large empire until she was defeated and captured by the Romans in 274.  However although she was allowed to live out her life in luxury in Rome, it appears she didn’t reach old age, possibly due to being executed, and or as some think she may have committed suicide.

These three Queens show that they may have had some good times and luxuries, but they a lot of hardships and didn’t have they luxurious lives of modern monarchs. These Queens most likely were smart and politically astute, and not as beautiful as portrayed in movies such as Cleopatra by Elizabeth Taylor.

Elizabeth Taylor played Cleopatra in the 1963 movie Cleopatra

Help To Be a Happier Person

Everyone has up and down moments, because we are not happy all the time, due to the many factors influencing our moods everyday. When you find that you may not be getting much enjoyment out of life, it may be time to learn how to be a happier person. In many ways, the happiness we get out of life is what we put into our living, and there are many things that can interfere with being happy including the following:

• Being afraid of the world in general.
• Greed makes you envious, and no envious person can be happy.
• Loss of a loved one.
• Illness.
• Being stressed out from work.
• Being unable to fulfill all your dreams.
• Feeling guilty over events.

The list of why anyone is unhappy can probably go on for pages, but once you have decided that you want to be a happier person, you have taken that important first step towards your goal.

You’re Only Human

As part of learning how to be a happier person you have to accept the fact that you are only a human being, not a superman or superwoman. Very often, you may make very unreasonable demands upon yourself during you daily activities which can leave you feeling flustered, harried, and unhappy. One person can do only so much every day, and feeling overwhelmed is a sure path to unhappiness.

However, learning how to be a happier person isn’t all that hard, and you will only need to make a few changes in your life and way of thinking to find yourself feeling better about yourself and everything else. Happiness is not out of your reach as long as you take a bit of time and effort to become a happier person.

Ways To Become Happy

The nice thing about finding out how to become happy is that it really won’t cost you anything at all.

While some people may think that going out and spending a lot of money on ‘things’ will make them happy, they generally find out that once the novelty has worn off, they are just as unhappy as they were before.

Happiness has to come from inside you, how you view yourself and the world.

Laughing is actually a great way how to become a happier person. When we laugh, we increase the blood flow in our bodies and release endorphins. As an example, skip the nightly news and instead watch some comedy, while you sit back and enjoy.

Meditation is another good method to employ to feel happier. Meditation helps you enter an advanced mental state that drives away stress and negative thoughts. Relaxation through actions such as meditation helps to release natural chemicals and hormones that counteract the effects of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. Stress hormones cause you to feel nervous and unhappy, so removing them, and replacing them with your own ‘feel good’ chemicals will make the world seem a lot brighter. The positive effects of meditation will wash over into your everyday life, too.

Keeping busy in a good way is another path how to become a happier person. Becoming involved in a new activity, rather than just plopping down in front of the TV can elevate your mood. For example, learning to play a musical instrument or taking up wood carving will help you feel more satisfied with yourself as well as giving you something interesting to do.

Consciously pushing aside negative thoughts is also an important happiness exercise. It’s all too easy for you to become angry or jealous or harbour a grudge. It’s not just you, everyone does this from time to time. Whenever you feel one of these negative feeling bubbling up, consciously stop it and think of something pleasant. In time, you will train yourself to think in a more positive vein and feel happier more of the time.

Don’t let anyone tell you that there are few ways how to become a happier person, becoming happier is within your reach if you just take a little effort to make it happen.
